Providing advice to the sports sector requires industry knowledge and depth of expertise. The Thrings’ team of sports lawyers has an extensive understanding of all the commercial aspects of the sports industry, borne from years of working with key clients including sports rights owners, teams, sponsors and individual sportsmen and women.
We pride ourselves on delivering pragmatic and strategic advice focused on the needs of sport businesses, including property aspects such as venue agreements and stadium redevelopments; intellectual property involved in merchandising and brand protection; commercial arrangements such as sponsorship, endorsement and official suppliers; ethical issues such as governing body rules and disciplinary matters. Our clients include Ryder Cup, Bath Rugby, Frank Warren, Box Nation and Lambourn Trainers Association.
Examples of our work include:
- Ryder Cup: we advised on all the contractual negotiations with the Scottish Government for the staging of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in 2014, including a Host Country Agreement setting out Scotland’s support and the infrastructure requirements, as well as the contractual negotiations with The Gleneagles Hotel, the venue in 2014, including a Venue Agreement setting out Gleneagles’ provision of the golf course and resort.
- Boxing Channel Media: Handling the negotiations for Boxing Channel Media on all of the agreements required to set up the new pay per view TV channel Box Nation dedicated to the sport of boxing. Our team advised on and negotiated: Promotion and content Licence Agreement with Frank Warren Promotions; EPG platform agreement with Sky; satellite uplink agreement with Arqiva; channel content distribution agreement; and a customer/subscriber services agreement.
