Bath; beautiful architecture, great amenities, a buzzing social scene and a thriving business community; as an Employment Solicitor at Thrings LLP, I enjoy working across all of our firm’s South West offices including our Bath office. We are lucky to have recently moved to be based on Queen Square, in the heart of the city, which is a stone’s throw away from some lovely bars, and restaurants which are perfect for lunch or an after work get together.
It is important to me to get involved in the business community across all of our office locations which inspired me to attend Bath Young Professionals (BYP) events. I initially became involved with BYP because it seemed like a great way to meet like-minded people, who are relatively junior in their professions, in an informal environment and I soon realised that BYP was slightly different than other networking groups that I had been to; it was more relaxed and definitely a lot more enjoyable. I attend BYP events, to network, build lasting relationships, raise my profile and most of all, because they are good fun!
I now chair the committee who run BYP, all of whom live and/or work in or around Bath. Originally formed in 2005, with the purpose of providing networking opportunities on an informal basis for young professionals living or working in Bath, the group has re-launched with a influx of new committee members, including representatives from Barclays, Monahans, Thrings and Withy King. We all recognise how important it is to network, engage in the Bath business community, and encourage those starting out in their professions. The committee are an enthusiastic bunch and are dedicated to organising events which are fun, a bit different, and which people actually want to go to!
Our membership currently includes individuals from all walks of business life and we are always keen to widen our reach and diversify our membership. Now, with the re-launch of the BYP in September this year, there are even more opportunities for young professional people to network, build contacts, profile their business and, above all, socialise, in a relaxed environment.
BYP holds quarterly events and informal networking drinks. Our Charity Quiz nights are always popular, and the sun even shone for our Summer Adventure Golf Tournament in Victoria Park which saw groups of three or four competing against one another to win the coveted title of “BYP Adventure Golfer of the Year”! Our most recent event was a spooky Halloween Party (complete with spiders, cobwebs, rats and pumpkins) and a Ghost Walk around the historic sights of Bath, which included real-life stories of macabre goings-on, haunting and the tragic events of yester-year. It was a brilliant night complete with some really scary moments, perfect for a Halloween theme!
Details of our next event, as well as discussions about business in Bath, will be posted on our BYP LinkedIn page. Our events are normally subsidised and membership is absolutely free.
If you or your colleagues are interested in joining the BYP or coming along to our events, either find us on LinkedIn or contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
