Farming faces new and bigger challenges following the Budget, and diversifying land for development projects is fast becoming one of the most appealing opportunities for landowners.

With long-term commitments and complicated obstacles to navigate, especially where multiple landowners are involved, having the right professional advice from the outset is vital to success.

These topics will be at the heart of a discussion led by Thrings’ Agricultural expert Mark Charter at this year’s Landed Estates and Farm Tax Conference, which this year focuses on guiding the rural sector through the issues.

Taking place on 3 June at the Dilly in London, the annual conference is one of the leading events in agricultural law, organised by legal events and content provider Thought Leaders 4.

In his talk, Mark will be discussing the overlap between property and private client perspective, covering two key factors to achieving success in starting a renewable energy project:

  • The practical steps for strategic project management – including how to go about assembling a professional team, what to consider when managing and mitigating risk, and the importance of reviewing the long-term impact of any proposed project on an estate.
  • Collaborating on land development – including that varying types and issues around contracts, legal structures for renewables projects and what can happen if landowners break rank.

Speaking ahead of the conference, Mark Charter, Partner in the Thrings Agriculture team, said: “Getting the first steps right when committing to a major development project, whether it is for housing, renewable energy, or indeed anything else, can be the difference between a fantastic new, low-maintenance income revenue and a long-term burden – so getting it right counts!

“I am thoroughly looking forward to tackling the variety issues and topics farmers and landowners will go through when considering diversifying into this area and providing some key tips to success, whether you are going it alone or in collaboration with neighbouring landowners.”
