Landowners seeking to progress clean energy projects on their estates could soon jump to the head of the queue under ambitious new reforms backed by Ofgem.
The plans, initially put forward by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) seek to streamline the UK’s electricity grid connection process, with a focus on projects ready to deliver clean power.
Currently, there are significant delays to gaining grid connectivity, some waiting up to 15 years according to the government, with the queue having reportedly grown tenfold over the past five years as a result of projects that could not be delivered, but which have not realised their connection time.
But under the new plans, schemes that are “ready” and “needed” will be given more expedited support to get connected, with the first of the projects potentially operational by next year. Meanwhile, projects seeking connection without clean energy credentials are likely to be deprioritised.
Natalia Sokolov, Thrings’ lead on Clean Energy, said: “The government’s focus on delivering more clean energy will certainly be welcomed by the those in the industry, particularly by landowners, developers and others involved in connections projects.
“Once these changes are in place, it is likely that we will see an increase in landowner schemes moving ahead, as well as the option deals being negotiated, so landowners will want to take a cautious approach to ensure any agreements they are offered are the right ones for them.
“We would always recommend seeking legal advice early on the planning, construction, real estate and the corporate and commercial elements of clean energy, renewable projects including option agreements. Given the long-term implications to the land, planning ahead and ensuring the next generation is aware of any commitments and covenants on the land is vital.”
