What is your name and what is your position at Thrings?
My name is Gavin Smith, and I’m a Senior Associate in the Private Wealth team in Bath. I advise on all aspects of private client law, including succession and estate planning, tax, trusts, wills and lasting powers of attorney. I joined Thrings during the pandemic, and despite the unusual situation in which the world currently finds itself, it’s been a very smooth transition – I’ve been made to feel extremely welcome.
Why did you decide to become a lawyer?
I decided I would like to be a solicitor after a week of work experience at a law firm when I was 14. Although none of that experience was in private client law, I enjoyed my six months as a trainee in that area and liked the idea of getting to know clients over an extended period to become their ‘trusted adviser’.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Watching or playing pretty much any sport, but especially cricket, football and tennis. My football team is Lincoln City - my dad is from Lincoln so my brother and I have him to thank for turning us into Imps fans. I also run a bit: I’ve completed the London Marathon three times, although my running highlight was when I took part in the IBC 4K 4Charity Fun Run in Amsterdam last year and lined up alongside Arsenal, Manchester United and Holland legend Robin van Persie.
Which three people – living or dead – would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?
I’m a huge fan of The Office. Sitting down for a meal with David Brent, Gareth Keenan and Tim Canterbury could make for an interesting experience.
When was the last time you did something for the first time?
Successfully cooking non-boil-in-the-bag rice. I’ll leave it at that.
What would you choose as your last meal?
Easy one: fillet steak, fries and mushrooms.
