Thrings lawyers have been recognised twice at this year’s South West Insider Dealmakers Awards as the firm picked up awards for its work on a pair of deals.
The firm’s Corporate team was out in force at the event, held at the Bristol Marriott Hotel on 26 June, with Thrings shortlisted in three categories - Medium-sized Deal of the Year, ESG Deal of the Year and Corporate Law Firm of the Year.
The first win came in the Environmental, Social and Governance Deal of the Year category, with the firm’s cross-departmental work to secure 422 acres of commercial farmland on behalf of Bristol-based charity Avon Needs Treesrecognised as the winner.
Led by Thrings Agriculture Partner Neil Barbour, with all corporate aspects of the deal handled by Senior Associate Joe Watkins, the deal was a major step in the charity’s work to create the brand new 100,00-tree Lower Chew Forest.
As well as managing the purchase of the land and negotiation of natural capital investment, the team was also instrumental in the securing of vital government investment and in the liaising between the project’s external private and public funding partners.
The second win came in the Medium-sized Deal of the Year category, with the judges having identified the innovation, collaboration and value created from the share sale of Wiltshire-based parking software pioneer Chipside as standing out from the shortlist.
The deal was of particular significance to Thrings’ Head of Corporate John Davies, who supported the founders of the business to set it up more than 20 years ago as a newly qualified solicitor, having acted for them ever since.
The wins follow what has been a big year for the team, having collectively facilitated deals worth collectively around half a billion pounds. This has been across a wide range of sectors from tech, real estate and engineering to hospitality, education and healthcare, with the team always seeking to secure an outcome in the best interests of the clients.
John Davies, Thrings’ Head of Corporate said: “Winning an award at events of this calibre is always exciting because you’re up against so many worthy alternatives, so to win two in such quick succession was a real shock!
“It is great to see the team’s efforts being recognised in this way after such a positive year. The deals for Avon Needs Trees and Chipside, two very valued clients, are just two of many they have toiled away on this year and these awards are a testament to the hard work they put in behind the scenes.
“A massive thank you to the judges for choosing us and to the folks at Insider for hosting another excellent event. We area already looking forward to next year!”
