Head of Family

Recognised in both Chambers 2020 and Legal 500 2016, Matthew heads up the family team at Thrings - one of the largest family law teams in southern England. Although not a lawyer, he specialises in all aspects of family work, including high-net-worth financial matters within divorce, pre- and post-nuptial agreements. He is also highly experienced in the Children Act 1989 and has extensive expertise in international child removal and abduction. Matthew's specialist skills are critical in helping clients avoid conflict and expensive litigation.

Private Client

In his role at Thrings, Matthew personifies the values that set us apart. His view that clients should always be viewed as a relationship rather than a transaction has allowed him to remain an essential, long-term point of contact for many of our clients. They trust his honesty and transparency, but also his deep experience and expertise in matters relating to farmers, landowners and high-net-worth individuals.

Matthew's role as leader of our family team means he is able to build the right team of specialists for each client and ensure they work cost effectively and with a strategic focus. This proactive approach to adding value for clients means Matthew is always one of the first people his clients call when they need help or guidance.

Matthew's relevant experience includes:
  • a multi-million pound divorce settlement where the client's assets were at significant risk of loss ‚ securing these assets and a favourable settlement for the client
  • successfully securing appropriate orders for clients who have been refused child arrangements (formerly contact) due to allegations by the other parent
  • negotiating a pre-nuptial agreement for a client which protected a multi-million pound asset base
  • multi-jurisdictional child abduction cases in Spain, France, Australia, America and India
