Ben Coulson, Partner, Private Client
What motivated you to become a lawyer?
It’s a bit of a cliché but I am a people person and helping others was a really big attraction for me. People tend to come to lawyers in “disaster” moments and the greatest satisfaction I take in my job, is being able to problem solve and help achieve the best outcome for my client.
Why do you specialise in succession and tax?
Initially, I was laser focused on being an employment lawyer. That, however, changed when I completed a seat in private client and found, despite not particularly looking forward to in all honestly, it was an area that was compassionate, technical and complex. I was able to help people when they needed help the most, and also delve into some really tricky issues. A perfect balance for me!
Can you highlight a case or a standout moment that was particularly interesting ?
I have dealt with some very complex matters, including trusts, farms, business assets and cross border advice. One of the most interesting matters from a technical perspective, was a recent agricultural estate instruction, in which we had to consider valuable claims for inheritance tax relief in conjunction with providing trust advice to the trustees of the discretionary trust that was set up in the Will. The aim of this approach was to minimise the tax position and enable the continuation of the farming activities in combination with the ongoing farming partnership. Aside from the technical bits, some of the standout moments generally stem from homemade Wills. One in particular I will always remember – a father disinherited his daughter for “making a dogs dinner with his garden when mowing the lawn”.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I am dog and sport mad. I love playing and watching football, rugby and cycling and love taking my dog, Aggie, for fun days out at the beach or through the woods.
If you weren't a lawyer what would you do?
In a parallel universe somewhere, I am sure there is a version of me doing some building and arty projects.
Name one thing that makes your life better?
My family.
