Russell is Head of our Agriculture Litigation Team, getting results for landed estates, farmers and landowners in the highest courts in the country. He loves spending time in the countryside.
What made you decide on a law career?
I always intended to study politics, however upon meeting my soon-to-be politics lecturer I found him about as inspiring as a cold rainy day. My father suggested I speak with the law lecturer, whose enthusiasm turned out to be infectious – and it went from there.
And why did you choose to specialise in Agriculture?
I grew up in the countryside and was brought up to understand agriculture and the rural way of life. The countryside and greenery help me relax, so I spend lots of time there with my wife Lucy and our spaniel. I also enjoy working for farmers and meeting them at home - many of whom share my core values of hard work, looking after your family, your neighbours and the land. Farming can be tough and can involve long hours but on the whole most farming clients are warm people, appreciative of the work we do together, even in stressful circumstances for the farmer or his family. I enjoy building those long-lasting relationships and it’s particularly gratifying when we are instructed again some years later.
What else do you like to do in your spare time?
Sport has always been a big part of my life and I still try to keep fit. It’s good for me, particularly when I can find myself behind a desk for long hours or doing a lot of travelling to meet farmers all over the country. I regularly run, play tennis, badminton, squash, five a side and golf.
Tell us some random facts about yourself?
I ran a half marathon in 1 hour 28 minutes. It took a lot of discipline and solitary training through woodland on cold, wet and even snowy days. I came 290th out of 20,000 and I’m still proud of that finishing place!
Name one thing that helps make your day better?
Sunshine.
Finally, describe yourself in three words?
Loyal. Traditional. Thoughtful
