Family law practitioners from across the country came together last weekend to discuss the latest updates in the ever-changing field, with Thrings’ own Zhenja Cann taking the stage as part of a high-profile panel.
An Associate in the firm’s Chambers and Legal 500 ranked Family team, Zhenja was invited to be part of the “Family Justice Question Time” panel at Resolution’s National Conference through her role as co-chair of the National Young Resolution Committee, bringing the perspective of junior lawyers to the wide array of topics being discussed.
Questions from the audience during the hour-long session included the likes of cohabitation reform, non-court dispute resolution and the new pathfinder pilot for children matters being piloted across the country, as well as concerns around domestic abuse.
The panel even turned its attention to Thrings’ innovative One Couple One Lawyer service, which helped spark a discussion on its applications for other areas of law, including assisting couples with pre-nuptial agreements.
Zhenja, whose expertise includes advising separating couples who are not married and highlighted the continuing common misconceptions of common law marriages, also presented her view on potential reform for the government, who are looking to potentially change this area of law.
As the network for family law professionals at the start of their careers, Young Resolution (YRes) gives its members access to expertise with peers and colleagues that benefits not only their firms but their clients across the country.
In her two-year role as co-chair, Zhenja’s focus is on providing junior lawyers with a presence in the field, using platforms such as the National Conference to advocate for the training, support and other resources they need to thrive in family law. In doing so, this would help them provide the best possible service to clients, as well as to be at the forefront of innovating best practice.
Zhenja Cann, Associate in the Thrings Family team and co-chair of Young Resolution’s National Committee, said: “Giving junior lawyers a voice and listening to their perspective is so important in preparing for the future of our field and I was delighted to be able to contribute to that at the Resolution conference.
“The engagement from the audience was fantastic and we were really able to go into depth on some very important issues. Being able to highlight the work we do, for example working in the complex world of unmarried couples and also focusing on out-of-court options such as One Couple One Lawyer, was a great opportunity to discuss the evolution of best practice and how we can continue to make things better and simpler for both ourselves as practitioners, and our clients.”
