Partner - Private Client

Based in our Bath Office, Mike has a wealth of experience providing strategic tax and estate planning advice to a broad variety of clients. Working closely with high-net-worth individuals and families, entrepreneurs, business owners, farmers and landowners, he advises on tax-efficient wealth and business succession planning and asset protection. Mike is highly valued by our clients when it comes to probate and estate administration matters, as well as power of attorney and court protection cases.

With his broad and in-depth experience, Mike supports our clients in many different ways. For example, working alongside our Agriculture team, he regularly assists clients with farming partnership agreements, often incorporating significant amounts of tax and succession planning alongside the partnership planning itself. For our land-owning Development of Land clients, Mike ensures they optimise for inheritance tax and capital gains through the use of trusts and partnerships. He also has experience advising on Transactions in Land and equalisation of sale proceeds in cases where there are multiple landowners of a site.

When working with entrepreneurs and business owners as part of our Business Growth Hub, Mike uses his expertise and insight to help manage wealth through business structures. He is also an invaluable source of knowledge when it comes to succession planning, especially for family businesses, using trusts, partnerships and advising on articles of association. He also works with our Private Client team on the structuring and restructuring of wills and trusts, as well as advising on using companies and partnerships to pass on assets in a tax-efficient manner.

Mike's relevant experience includes:
  • advising a farming and entrepreneurial family on various tax and succession matters. This included Wills and gifts, entrepreneurs‚ relief claims, restructuring ownership of family and business assets between a trust, partnership and company, and advising on the tax-efficient holding of development land
  • setting up a family investment company as a part of an inheritance tax planning strategy to hold a commercial property investment portfolio worth in excess of £7m
  • advising on the transfer of a light industrial estate and farmland worth £15m held by various family-owned entities to a company, to enable them to develop into a key logistics site
  • completing a Variation of Trusts Act application to extend the perpetuity and accumulation periods of two offshore trusts, which jointly own a landed estate in the UK worth approximately £12m. Subsequently advising on the partition of the estate between the trusts
  • advising on a complex estate following the death of a successful local entrepreneur. Negotiating with HM Revenue and Customs on a number of complex issues, including the status of gifts made prior to death, business property relief claims and inheritance tax issues arising from a family company, administering various appointments of properties out of a Will Trust and drafting a complicated deed of variation
  • advising on the restructuring of the ownership of various properties and parcels of valuable farmland in order to resolve a family dispute and related tax issues
